This blog is not my typical post. Today, we’re discussing mental health because it needs to be talked about. As a culture, we often shy away from this topic, but lately, I’ve felt all too close to the reality of suicide and the impacts that ignoring mental health can have on all of us.

A Personal Reflection

In the last three months, our family has experienced the loss of two individuals to suicide. This reality feels more common and personal than ever before, and it’s clear that we need to have more open conversations about it.

This year, I had the pleasure of meeting Angela, the founder of Stay; For Life, in my Women’s Business League Networking group (Go Wells Chapter!). Angela started this non-profit organization after the tragic death of her son, Trent, two years ago. Their mission is to save lives by advocating for men’s mental health and suicide prevention. Getting to know Angela and working on updating their website has opened my eyes to the struggles surrounding mental health and how many people are affected by this issue.

The Importance of Taking a Break

Today, I want to emphasize the importance of taking breaks. We all need a pause at some point or another. A break helps us reset, take a step back, relax, and reflect. It allows us to see that maybe everything on our to-do list isn’t as urgent as we thought—that some things can wait.

My Struggle with Taking a Break

I’ve never been great at taking breaks. My to-do lists always seem endless, filled with tasks for others that I feel compelled to complete promptly. However, life happens. When I miss a deadline or don’t get something done on time, I realize that the world doesn’t end; my clients aren’t furious with me, and everything eventually gets done.

Embracing Resets

This year, I took more “resets” than ever before. I jokingly referred to it as my year of vacations. If you had known me at the beginning of 2024, you would have seen how desperately I needed that first break.

As I reflect on this year—how it began, where it went, and how it’s ending—I’m amazed at my journey. Not only did I take more vacations than usual, but I also launched more websites and achieved my goals for the first time ever.

The Benefits of Taking a Break

Maybe there’s truth in the saying that taking breaks can lead to greater clarity and productivity. Research shows that breaks can:

  • Reduce chronic stress
  • Improve memory and concentration
  • Boost creativity
  • Prevent burnout
  • Support overall well-being

Taking breaks has allowed me to open my heart and mind to new possibilities, ultimately helping me become a better version of myself.

Practical Tips for Taking Breaks

Here are some strategies for incorporating effective breaks into your routine:

  • Use the Pomodoro Technique: Work in focused intervals followed by short breaks.
  • Set Reminders: Use phone alarms to remind you when it’s time to take a break.
  • Plan Enjoyable Activities: Engage in hobbies or activities you love during your downtime.
  • Take Power Naps: Short naps can rejuvenate your mind and body.
  • Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate meditation or deep-breathing exercises into your breaks.

Make It a Habit

The key takeaway is that asking for and receiving breaks should become a regular part of your business process and personal life. By consistently prioritizing these moments of rest, you’ll build trust in yourself and improve your overall mental health.

Looking Ahead

Next week, we’ll discuss planning our goals for 2025 and envisioning the year we want to have. I hope this will help you set your goals and intentions for the upcoming year.

Now, I’m going to sign off to spend some time with my family this week—to enjoy the moment without stressing about work. I encourage you to do the same.

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Winter Solstice—whatever you celebrate! Remember to take a moment for yourself amidst the hustle and bustle. We all need each other.
